In this course we will look at the reasons why the Romans came to Britain and why some tribal leaders were happy to ally with them and why others opposed them. We will see the major effects of Roman lifestyles, new towns, roads, legal systems and the heavy hand of the Roman army in the troublesome Northern and Western areas of Britain. We will look at some of the main figures in the opposition to the Romans. The course will include field trips to local Roman sites and museums.
Over 5 weeks the course will look at five different aspects of the lives of the women living through the Victorian period who were married to coal miners in County Durham.
These are the women who were born at the beginning of the 1800s who were seldom seen as individuals by the rest of the world, particularly by the men of the time. They were mostly illiterate and remained so throughout the whole of their lives and therefore unable to to leave any written records of their lives and feelings.
